How to Screen Record on macOS 10.15.7

by admin

If you’re using macOS 10.15.7 (Catalina), you already have a built-in tool for screen recording no need to install third-party software. Whether you’re capturing a tutorial, recording gameplay, or saving a video call, here’s how to do it easily.

Method 1: Use the Screenshot Toolbar

macOS Catalina introduced a simple shortcut to open the screen recording tool:

Steps:

  1. Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 5
This opens the Screenshot Toolbar at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Choose Recording Option:
    • Click the “Record Entire Screen” icon to capture everything.
    • Click the “Record Selected Portion” icon to record a specific area.
  3. Click “Record” on the toolbar to begin.
  4. To stop recording, click the Stop button in the top menu bar (near the clock), or press Command (⌘) + Control + Esc.
  5. The recording saves automatically to your Desktop (by default), unless you’ve changed the location.

Method 2: Use QuickTime Player

QuickTime Player also allows you to screen record:

Steps:

  1. Open QuickTime Player (you can find it via Spotlight Search or in the Applications folder).
  2. In the top menu, go to File > New Screen Recording.
  3. A small recording window will appear. Click the Record button.
  4. Choose to record the entire screen or drag to select a portion.
  5. Click Start Recording.
  6. To stop, click the Stop button in the menu bar.
  7. QuickTime will open your recording in a preview window. You can trim, save, or share the video.

Adjusting Microphone and Options

Before recording, you can click Options in the Screenshot Toolbar or the arrow next to the QuickTime Record button to:

  • Enable microphone recording
  • Set a timer
  • Choose where to save your file
  • Show/hide mouse clicks in recording

Final Tips

  • Make sure you have enough disk space for large recordings.
  • If your screen recording fails or shows a black screen, check System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Screen Recording to ensure permissions are enabled for QuickTime or Screenshot.
