A prevalent trend among Indians is going abroad to study medicine. In India, there has always been hype about becoming a doctor, which has a lot of value in the Indian social diaspora. The most preferred country to study medicine for Indians is mainly Russia, China, Ukraine,  Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and the Philippines. Around 18000 Indian students were in Ukraine before Operation Ganga, and most were studying medicine.

People in India still look at doctors as God incarnate, so the profession is given high regard. Also, there is always a shortage of doctors, especially in rural areas. So students choose abroad exposure to gather the proper skill set.

We highlighted some of the reasons why Indian students choose to study abroad:

In the Indian context, there is a lack of equal opportunity for students. The rarity of opportunity impacts a significant number of students. But many still wish to be associated with the profession of a doctor.

Problems with medical colleges in India

There is an issue with several colleges in India. There are more aspirants than seats.   There are more MBBS aspirants than the seats for MBBS seats in India. According to National Testing Agency in NEET 2021, 16.1 lakh students registered for the exam.

For the test only 15.4 lakh students and 8.7 lakh students qualified the test. In 2021-2022 the data revealed by National Medical Commission or NMC, there were 596 medical colleges in the country. There were a total of 88,120 MBBS seats.

Most of the students are in favour of Government colleges, although private medical colleges give neck-to-neck competitions.

 Fees Structure

In most fully private colleges, the total course fees can range between several lakh to crores. More than 50 % of total seats are affordable fees in government colleges. In a government medical college, the cost of an MBBS degree can go upto a few lakhs of rupees for the entire course. It can go upto a crore in a private medical college.

For those who go for management seats, the capitation fees can be more.

The MBBS course in a foreign medical university in the east and Eastern Europe will cost upto 30 lakh to 40 lakh.

College distribution

There is an uneven distribution of colleges in India. The states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala have many more colleges. The cost factor is significant in the metros.

Indians are still aiming to make medical education more accessible. More opportunities must be created in public rather than the private sector. The central and state government can bring in a lot of involvement.

If there are many government medical colleges, then students from poor socio-economic backgrounds can have more access. Private colleges reduce the strict standards, which is still a concern. marketguest.com
