The Environmental Protection Club at Allen High School

During the fall semester, members of the Environmental Protection Club at Allen High School have been working on a number of projects. Some of these projects include the SproutUp program, CESJDS, the New York Water Environment Association, and the Columbia Aquanauts.

CESJDS

CESJDS has several clubs to choose from, but the environmental protection club has recently caught the school’s attention. The aforementioned is one of several green initiatives that have been implemented on campus. Aside from the usual suspects like recycling bins and composting, a community garden is located near the Rocking Horse Center. The school has a nurse on staff who is trained to monitor potential spread of illness. In addition, students in good standing are required to report any positive changes in their personal lives to the campus nurse.

Using the school’s resources wisely is not an easy task, but that’s not to say that a green school can’t be a green school. CESJDS’s Chief Financial Officer Julie Hoover says that they’ve been able to recoup over 30 percent of their electricity costs through energy-efficient lighting and other measures. A few months ago, the school also switched out all the lights on both campuses for LEDs. The school also installed an automatic water bottle filling station that has saved thousands of plastic water bottles from the landfill.

Allen High School

Located on the Allen campus, the Environmental protection club at Allen High School is an extracurricular organization dedicated to promoting environmental awareness and stewardship. The club is a voluntary group of students who participate in local clean-ups and develop creative approaches to environmental issues.

The club has several programs in place, one of which is Allen Recycles Day. The event takes place on November 3rd of each year. Students and teachers are encouraged to get involved in the yearly event. Specifically, the event is designed to get students and teachers thinking about the importance of recycling.

Defenders of Wildlife

Founded in 1947, Defenders of Wildlife is an American non-profit membership organization that works to protect wildlife and habitat. Its primary objectives are to save endangered species, protect habitats, and reduce the impact of climate change on animal populations. It is governed by an 18-member board. In 2016, the organization listed $26,164,000 in net assets. Approximately nine percent of the funding came from royalties, grants, and bequests.

Defenders works with local governments, scientists, elected officials, and the media to protect wildlife and habitats in North America. It also works to increase the use of alternative fuels and raise the fuel efficiency of cars.

Columbia Aquanauts

Despite the fact that it is not an official Columbia University Club, the Columbia Aquanauts is an organization that engages students from different backgrounds in a number of ways. This includes consulting projects, internship programs, and student-industry interaction. It also has a number of social events including a student awards ceremony, and a series of yearly parties.

There is a plethora of student groups to choose from, most of which focus on the same topic. Some of the more notable ones include the plethora of feisty females that make up the Columbia University Women’s Club, and the aforementioned Columbia Aquanauts.

New York Water Environment Association

Founded in 1929, the New York Water Environment Association is an environmental protection club with more than 2,500 members in the New York area. The association is dedicated to enhancing the water environment and protecting the health of New Yorkers through education and advocacy. The association’s goals include educating people about water quality and related issues, promoting sustainable water quality management, and offering information on highly technical topics.

Members of the New York Water Environment Association include chemists, civil and environmental engineers, and water quality professionals. They participate in the organization’s various outreach and education programs, which include annual symposiums and other events.

SproutUp

SproutUp has been around for more than a decade and a half, providing free science and technology related programs to thousands of New York City public school children. The program boasts about 100 volunteer instructors and is the largest environmental science program in the tristate area. Its statewide scalability has been achieved through the formation of a partnership with the New York City Department of Education. The program is a model of excellence for a nonprofit organization. The SproutUp organization is a model for socially conscious student volunteers who are interested in a more hands-on environment in which to hone their skills.

Gallatin’s Science Technology Arts + Creativity

Using science to protect the environment is one of the primary aims of Gallatin’s Science Technology Arts + Creativity and Environmental Protection Club. The club is working to identify sources of pollution and help the community implement proactive state policies to protect the Gallatin River. It is also concerned with the potential for unstoppable changes due to global warming.

The Upper Missouri Waterkeeper is calling for a designation of “impaired” on the Gallatin River, which would free up resources and allow for new development to be postponed until pollution sources are identified. The S Fork and W Fork of the Gallatin River display unnaturally high nutrient loadings, and noxious filamentous algae is a key indicator of an imbalanced river system.
