RESPONSIBILITIES OF A CAREGIVER IN ELDERLY CARE

by Uneeb Khan

The provision of elderly services at home can also be called day care, visiting care, or home care. It can be as simple as a visit once a week, to schedule a daily appointment or overnight care. Your loved one can have caregivers support them in many ways that will help them stay happy, safe, and independent at home

One of the health care professionals who aids the nurse in the administration of the patient’s physical, mental and emotional well-being, especially the elderly, is the caregiver. The caregiver’s primary task is to make sure that the patient is properly taken care of, regardless of their nationality, religion status, race, or other characteristics.

Care for our elderly is an extremely delicate subject. Hence it is essential to take care of them. This is a huge responsibility, even though one might assume it is the same as caring after children and infants. Both require special care and attention. They are also susceptible to abuse and medication, as well as safety.

One option for caring for the elderly is to hire a caregiver. Caring for the elderly is a difficult job. It requires patience, understanding, and time. This job involves many responsibilities. Today, caregivers play a wide variety of roles in providing effective health care. These are just some of the many responsibilities and roles caregivers have towards elderly care.

ROLES

The caregiver is an Adviser/Consultant. They must be able to communicate with their clients and offer counselling, if necessary. The caregiver can help the elder to feel less insecure by introducing them to the surrounding environment.

As a teacher, informs patients about healthy lifestyle practices and helps them to prevent future illnesses or diseases. The elderly is taught how to take care of their personal hygiene without the assistance of a caregiver or nurse.

Acts as the sponsor of the patient’s behalf and plans, organizes, and explains his rights.

As a Coordinator, the caregiver is in direct contact with the patient and the whole health care team which ensures proper coordination in ensuring the total wellness of an elderly which is the main focus.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Direct nursing activities and care activities such as vital signs monitoring are performed
  • Patient is kept safe, healthy and clean
  • Social, intellectual, spiritual, physical, and emotional care for the patients’ welfare
  • Assists the patient with personal hygiene, such as dressing, toileting, and bathing. It is difficult for elders to do this by themselves.
  • Assist in preparing meals.
  • Preparation and administration of appropriate medication
  • Informing the elderly when physical therapy or rehabilitation is necessary
  • Assists the elderly with their daily chores.
  • Assists with house calls and visits the doctor according to schedule

Caring for elderly people is a difficult job. It requires a well-planned approach to caregiving. This will ensure that they have a healthier and more convenient lifestyle. Learning and applying what you have learned is the best way to learn. It is important to recognize the limitations of caring for elderly people while also caring for yourself.

ADDITIONAL ROLES FOR A CAREGIVER

While caretaker for an elderly should be careful not to get too close, there are many other roles that a caregiver can play to help their patient. Emotional support can be very beneficial and healthy for an elderly patient. This can sometimes be difficult because as a caregiver you have to listen to your patient’s complaints. Your elderly patient may have issues with their children or grandchildren so they need someone they can talk to .The caregiver must also be a good listener.

WATCHING OUT FOR SCAMS AGAINST THE ELDERLY

A caregiver may also consider a job as a watchdog against scams targeting senior citizens. There are many scams targeting seniors today, including phone calls, email, and regular mail. There are laws that prohibit scams against seniors. As a caregiver, you can monitor the situation and help your senior citizen to avoid falling for these scams. While you don’t have to be an attorney, it is important to pay close attention to these scams as a caregiver. Another concern is when someone rings your doorbell to try to scam you and/or your patient. Be vigilant.
