Your vet will conduct a comprehensive eye exam and other tests to determine if your dog has vision problems. It is in some ways a process of elimination. PRA can be a progressive condition and may cause vision impairment for years.

PRA is a hereditary condition that has no known cause. Therefore, selective breeding is the best way to reduce its prevalence. Some veterinary hospitals may offer a DNA test to determine if your dog has the disease.

Different types of progressive retina atrophy in dogs

Dogs can develop progressive retinal atrophy in two main ways.
