Your job was announced shortly when Dutch Bros launched its IPO. Since you are Dutch Bros’ first CTO What will be your role when the company grows?

You shouldn’t be able to publicly trade as a business unless technology is at the basis of what you’re doing.

As we look to expand to come, technology will need to play a larger role in ensuring that our interactions are smooth and communications are seamless. My responsibility is safeguarding and preserving the culture of our company as we become bigger and expand the technology ecosystem that surrounds our employees.

The foundation of our culture is the fact that we love to be entertained. When you visit an establishment, there’s music on and our baristas will come close to you, talk with you, and even ask questions about your day. We’ve discovered that the primary reason that for a large number of customers to come returning at Dutch Bros is because of having the chance to talk to our baristas.

What do you think technology can contribute to?

It’s my job to help employees to perform the things they excel at. There’s technology within the shop that allows us to be more efficient and automated within this tiny space so that the team members are able to concentrate more on the needs of the customer.

In HR, there’s also technology that employees utilize in order to control their health benefits as well as their personal information about the company. These things can be modified to create lower friction for the end user.
