Besides being a wonderful sight rising out of the city’s smog, it also provides functions for things here on earth, like controlling the tides of our oceans. The full moon is often depicted in various forms of media, and learning how to draw a full moon is a great way to turn it into an amazing work of art.

This tutorial will show you how to draw a majestic version of a full moon! We hope you’re thrilled as you follow our step-by-step guide to drawing a full moon in just 6 easy steps. Step 1:

For this guide on how to draw a full moon, we’ll start by drawing a circular shape. As you can see in our reference image, we used a fairly jagged line to give the moon a bit more texture on its surface. However, there is a way to make it easier for you.

We suggest using a light pencil with a drawing tool like a compass to draw an even circle. With this circle to guide you, you can use your pen to create a rougher surface for the moon. The reference image will show you what we recommend the line for! Once drawn, we can start adding some details in the next steps.

Step 2:

The moon is by no means a smooth orb in the sky, and many features and craters mark it. We’ll add some of these feature details to your full moon drawing in the next step of the guide. For now, we will draw some crater details for the moon background.

As shown in the reference image, these craters can be drawn in irregular round shapes and will have different sizes. They will also be bare with detail, but we will add texture and dimension detail to each crater as we progress through the guide. When you’re ready to move on to Step 3 of the guide, we can move on to the next part!

Step 3:

This third step in our how-to draw a full moon guide will allow you to add a few more craters to the moon’s surface and more detail to the existing ones. First, draw more rounded shapes for the new craters that fill the central part of the moon. Once these new craters are added, we will add points and curved line details to existing and new craters to make them more dynamic.

Step 4:

We can now focus on adding the final features and craters to the moon before moving on to the final details in the next step. To do this, you can continue adding craters as you have done so far. This means creating rounded shapes and adding the same dot and line details you used. These details are also the ones that you can modify according to your preferences. Once all of that is added, we’ll move on to the final details we mentioned!

Step 5:

In this step of our guide on drawing a full moon, we will add different details to the image. The moon will often be half obscured by shadow depending on its position, and we’ll render that with the details we’ll add in this step. For this image, we will focus primarily on the lower left side of the moon. To create this dark side of the moon effect, you can use lots of twisty, winding lines between the craters and other details you’ve drawn.

These will be drawn thick enough to create this effect. Once you’ve drawn these lines, you can also add your details! You can draw planets and stars in the background or add something fun, like an alien ship landing on the surface. What can you think of to finish this image?

Step 6:

You are now ready to complete your full moon drawing by adding colour. Our reference image used shades of yellow and beige on the gradient fill. This highlights that certain sections of the surface are more illuminated than others. You can use similar colours and shades for your image, but you should also feel free to use any other colours you like!
