How to crimp a Cat6 cable? Can I use a Cat6 cable for the Internet?

by Uneeb Khan

A Cat6 cable is a shielded or unshielded LAN cable with a maximum bandwidth of 250MHz and can transmit at a maximum speed of 10Gbps. In the shielded version of Cat6 cable, the shielding protects the twisted pairs of wires and eventually helps to prevent crosstalk and noise interference, Cat6 cable has several advantages over all the LAN cables present before this exception cable was introduced. However, despite its usefulness, you may sometimes find it challenging to crimp a Cat6 cable, Therefore, to clear the doubt, we will show the easiest method to crimp a Cat6 cable in this article. Furthermore, the second half of this informative article will answer whether you can use the Cat6 cable for the Internet or not.

How to Crimp a Cat6 cable?

  1. Firstly, you need to strip the cable about 1 inch from the end. For stripping the cable, you need to insert the cable into the stripper section of the crimping tool and squeeze it tightly.

Note: You need to rotate the crimping tool around the cable in an even motion to get a clean and smooth cut.

  • In this step, untwist and straighten the wires inside the Cat6 cable so that you can effortlessly sort them in the correct order.
  • After untwisting and straightening the wires within the Cat6 cable, you need to arrange them in the correct order. You need to follow the correct sequence for crimping a Cat6 cable. The correct sequence is Orange/White, Orange, Green/White, Blue, Blue/White, Green, Brown/White, Brown.

Note: The wires labeled as Orange/White, Blue/White, or Brown/White indicate the small wires containing two different colors.

  • In this step, you need to cut the wires into an even line 13mm from the insulation coating. To execute this step, you need to hold the wire with your index finger and thumb to keep them in the correct order. Finally, use the cutting portion of the crimping tool to cut wires into an even line.
  • Once the previous step finishes successfully, you should insert the wires into the RJ-45 connector. To insert the wire within the RJ-45 connector, you should hold the RJ-45 connector so that the clip faces downward and the metal pin faces upward.

Note: You should insert it in such a way so that the wires properly fit into the small groove present within the connector.

  • After inserting the wires within the RJ-45 connector, you need to crimp the cable by sticking the RJ-45 connector into the crimping portion of the crimping tool.

In this step, you need to insert the RJ-45 connector into the crimping portion of the crimping tool. Squeeze the handle once to crimp the connector and squeeze again to ensure all pins are pushed down.

  • Finally, remove the cable from the tool, check whether all the pins are pushed down properly, and lightly pull the RJ-45 connector to ensure it is properly attached to the cable or not.

Note: If any pins are not pushed down properly, you need to put the RJ-45 connector back into the crimping section of the tool and crimp again.

So, you can easily crimp a Cat6 cable with the help of a crimping tool by following the seven simple steps mentioned in this section of this informative article.

Now we will move into the next section of this article, where we will reveal whether you will be able to use Cat6 cable for the Internet or not.

Can I use a Cat6 cable for the Internet?

Yes, you can efficiently utilize Cat6 cable for Internet connection since it offers a maximum transmission speed of 10Gbps, which is sufficient for an internet connection. So, Cat6 cables can easily handle an Internet connection with a transmission speed of 1000Mbps or even 1 Gbps.

Another reason for using Cat6 cable for the Internet is because the Shielded Cat6 cables prevent noise and electromagnetic interference. Therefore, by using a Cat6 cable, you will not experience any disturbance while using the Internet since it will prevent any noise and electromagnetic interference.

Conclusion

As promised at the beginning of this informative article, we have a given step-by-step explanation of how to crimp a Cat6 cable onto an RJ-45 connector using the crimping tool. Furthermore, we have also answered and explained whether a person could use Cat6 cable for the Internet or not.
