99 Whenever I receive emails from readers saying, I am so disorganized and don’t know where to begin! They can do this in any room in their home. They just need to pick one area and use the following steps to declutter and organize it. As soon as the first area has been completed, they can move on to the next. There won’t be an overnight change. As we take little steps to clear out the clutter, we will soon start feeling more organized! The article below explains the system, or you can read about it in the blog post below. Come on, let’s do this! When it comes to organizing, that’s often the case. Having a blank slate helps me start fresh. It is always helpful for me to see what I have when I clear out the whole space. My storage needs can then be assessed and the space can be utilized to its full potential. Get rid of all the clutter Decluttering is a process in which I am ruthless. Items that I haven’t used recently can usually be discarded if I haven’t used them recently. My toss pile contains items that are broken. The sooner it’s stained or worn out, the sooner it’s thrown out. Getting rid of as much as possible will make our space feel less cluttered. There is no point in having both the stuff and the space at the same time. It’s a beautiful blank slate in front of us now that we’ve cleared out our space. The only things we want to put back are the ones that are absolutely necessary! Corral like items Organizing takes place next by finding a way to categorize our items and store them in a neat, accessible manner. As part of this process, we do not have to purchase a bunch of fancy bins just so we can have this space. In order to come up with new ideas, I always start with what I have in my house and try to think creatively. It is not uncommon for me to use shoe boxes and diaper boxes wrapped in pretty paper to store things in some parts of the home. My otherwise boring bins have been spiced up with pretty tape. The organization does not have to be an expensive endeavor (especially if you do it in a pretty way!). Organizers, bins, and boxes should be labeled I love this part! Labeling is my favorite thing to do! I enjoy labeling not only because it helps me determine what is where, but also because it’s pretty! Labeling can be done in several ways. It is not uncommon for me to print a simple tag from the computer whenever I need one. The Cricut machine is sometimes used by me to cut adhesive vinyl labels I’ve designed using my Cricut machine. Occasionally, I will use a label maker to create labels, and sometimes I will use a printer to make them. It would be possible to handwrite a chalkboard label on the chalkboard. There are so many possibilities out there! Fill in the space We are finally ready to start putting things back in place. Once we separate everything, corral it into bins (when appropriate), and label it, it will be much easier to organize. It is always my habit to organize my space by putting the most frequently used items in the most accessible location. Infrequently used items can be placed on higher shelves or in other areas that are harder to reach. After filling in the gaps, I keep like items together and fill in the gaps from there. Furniture like sofa beds helps to maximize small spaces both functionally and aesthetically. The organizing system isn’t working, change it The last piece of advice I can give you is to don’t be afraid to tweak systems that aren’t working for you. In some instances, I’ve spent a lot of time setting up systems and making them look pretty, but when it came to day-to-day use, I found that they weren’t practical or practical. As an example, I stacked lidded boxes under our sink one time while organizing. Although it looked neat, the items at the bottom were difficult to reach, so I simply wouldn’t use them or I would make a mess getting to them.
