Do you really know about the meanings of SUV、SRV、MPV?

We often see terms such as SUV, SRV, MPV, etc. in car magazines or on car websites, so what do these terms really mean?

Definitions of the various V’s
SUV
The full name of the SUV is Sport Utility Vehicle. It originated in the United States in the 1980s and was developed from a pickup truck to cater for the young white-collar population.

It has a large ground clearance and to a certain extent has the comfort of a sedan and the off-road performance of a cross-country vehicle.

CRV
The CRV is a Honda vehicle, the domestic version of which is called the Dongfeng Honda CR-V, which means City Recreation Vehicle.

SRV
The full name of the SRV is Small Recreation Vehicle, which translates to “small recreational vehicle” and generally refers to a two-car sedan, such as the Shanghai GM Scirocco SRV.

RAV
RAV comes from a small Toyota sports car, the RAV4, which Toyota explains as Recreational, Activity and Vehicle, abbreviated to RAV, with the addition of a 4 because the car is four-wheel drive.

HRV
The HRV is derived from the Shanghai General Motors Buick Escalade HRV sedan, meaning Healthy (health), Recreational (leisure) and Vigorous (vitality).

MPV
The full name of MPV is Multi-Purpose Vehicle (or Mini Passenger Van), which means multi-purpose vehicle. It combines the functions of a sedan, a station wagon and a vans.

Each seat in the vehicle is adjustable and can be combined in a variety of ways. In recent years, MPV cars have become smaller, and the so-called S-MPVs have emerged.

CUV
CUV is the abbreviation for Car-Based Utility Vehicle, a multi-purpose vehicle that combines the characteristics of a sedan, an MPV and an SUV, also known as a Crossover.

The CUV was first introduced in Japan in the late 20th century and has since become popular in North America and Western Europe, becoming the best choice for those who appreciate the ride and handling of a sedan, the functionality of a sport utility vehicle, the rugged look of an SUV, and the fuel economy and passability of an SUV. In early 2004, the Outlander was launched into the Chinese market, thus creating a new car design concept in the domestic car market, the CUV.

NCV
Literally, New Concept Vehicle. It is based on a sedan chassis and combines the comfort of a sedan with the off-road capability of an SUV. As a New Concept Vehicle, it has a wider range of uses than a family sedan.

RV
The full name of the RV is Recreation Vehicle, which is a type of vehicle suitable for entertainment, leisure and travel.

There is no strict scope for RVs. In a broad sense, light passenger vehicles such as MPVs, SUVs and CUVs, in addition to sedans and sports cars, can all be classified as RVs.

In addition, in terms of vehicle types, there are cars, buses, trucks and trucks, and the main difference between them is the chassis.

Depending on the chassis, it is possible to distinguish between these seemingly identical ‘V’ vehicles and which category they belong to.

Chassis differences
SUVs are designed on the chassis technology of pickup trucks, which are better off-road but less comfortable, such as the low-end and mid-range pickups in China. A special case is the Great Wall Haval CUV, which, despite its name, does not have a sedan chassis and instead uses a trapezoidal I-beam non-carrying body, more in the direction of an SUV.

The CUV is designed with a sedan chassis as its platform. Although the CUV has the appearance of an SUV, it is more comfortable and less off-road than an SUV, but better than a typical sedan.

The Outlander CUV, Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4 are all considered CUVs.

The company’s main business is to provide a wide range of products and services to the public, such as the Shanghai GM GL8, Prima, Odyssey, etc. In addition, the SRV can be considered a sub-concept of the sedan.

No matter which V your car is, the most important thing is to clean and maintain it properly!
