108 The world of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is rich in lore and fun facts. Did you know these interesting tidbits about the Nichirin Demon Slayer swords carried by the Hashira and other Demon Slayers? 1. The Nichirin Demon Slayer swords are made from Scarlet Ore and Scarlet Crimson Iron Sand Nichirin swords, and other Nichirin weapons, are made from Scarlet Ore and Scarlet Crimson Iron Sands which are found high on mountains such as Sunlight Mountain and Mount Yoko. These ores are bathed in sunlight all year long, giving them a special advantage against the demon foes against which they are wielded. 2. These ores may have real-life inspiration. Nichirin blades, and the ores from which they are made, may be inspired by “iron sand,” known in Japanese as “Masa Satetsu” which, when exposed to direct sunlight, can absorb sufficient energy to become hot enough to cause burns when touched. 3. The designation “Nichirin” may be a nod to the sun. The Japanese word for “Sun” is “太陽,” “Taiyō.” However, “nichi,” or “hi” (日) which means “day,” can be taken to mean “solar” or “sun.” Combined with “rin” (輪), which means “ring,” the name “Nichirin” may be taken to mean “sun ring,” or “solar ring,” a nod to the origins of the steel that is used to make Demon Slayer swords. 4. Nichirin Demon Slayer swords have a special secret that makes them especially effective at slaying demons. Demons have a fatal weakness: they die when exposed to sunlight. Specifically, they turn to ash. The fact that Nichirin blades are made of ores that are exposed to sunlight throughout the year makes the perfect weapon for dispatching demons. When a Nichirin Demon Slayer sword is used to decapitate a demon, it immediately causes the demon to crumble into ash. 5. Demon Slayers choose their own ore. Any entrant to the Demon Slayer Corps must first pass a rigorous trial known as the Final Selection, during which they are left exposed on the slopes of Mount Fujikasane. The slopes of the mountain are infested with live demons. To pass the test, each candidate must survive seven nights. Successful Demon Slayers – those that survive – may then choose their own ore, from which a swordsmith will produce a custom Demon Slayer sword. 6. Nichirin swords take their color from the skills of the Demon Slayers that wield them. No two Nichirin swords are necessarily the same. In fact, the nature and color of the sword are influenced by the level of skill of the slayer or Hashira who wields them. Since sword coloration is influenced by the bearer, these Katana are known as “Color Changing Katana.” Consider select Hashira, the most elite of the Demon Slayers. These Demon Slayers are defined by a specific breathing technique, which influences their abilities as well as the color and nature of their swords. ● Tanjiro Kamado: Tanjiro Kamado practices the Water and Sun-Breathing techniques. Demon Slayer Tanjiro’s sword is a standard sized Nichirin sword with an obsidian black blade; perhaps a reference to his former occupation as a collier. ● Kyojuro Rengoku: Kyojuro Rengoku’s sword is a standard sized Nichirin blade. He practices the Flame-Breathing style, so unlike Demon Slayer Tanjiro’s sword, his has a flame pattern on the blade. ● Sanemi Shinazugawa: The Wind Hashira, Sanemi Shinazugawa has a standard Nichirin blade with a jagged green pattern on the blade. ● Mitsuri Kanroji: Misturi, the Love Hashira, is extremely strong and flexible, and as such, wields a flexible, whip-like Nichirin blade. Mitsuri’s sword is long, flexible, and whip-like, and she is precise and powerful enough to cut through both lightning and sound. ● Giyu Tomioka: Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira, carries a deep blue Nichirin blade. ● Inosuke Hashibira: Inosuke Hashibira, who practices the Beast-Breathing Technique, wields dual, tsuba-less Katana that have jagged, chipped blades. 7. Only four of nine Hashira carry a “standard Nichirin” katana. There are nine Hashira, but only four, Kyojuro Rengoku, Sanemi Shinazugawa, Giyu Tomioka and Miuchiro Tokito, use standard Nichirin Katana. 8. Not all Demon Slayers carry only a sword. Consider Tengen Uzui, the Sound Hashira, who wields twin Nichirin cleavers connected by a chain. He is not the only one to use “atypical” weapons. Gyomei Himejima carries a flail and battle-axe. Modern weapons make an appearance in Kimetsu no Yaiba, too. Genya Shinazugawa (who does carry a wakizashi) also wields a double-barreled shotgun that fires Nichirin shot. 9. Blade color is not the only personalized, distinguishing feature of a Nichirin Demon Slayer sword. In addition to the colored blades of Demon Slayer swords, many of them feature tsuba configurations that reflect the abilities of the user. Consider Rengoku’s flame-inspired tsuba or the whirlpool-shaped tsuba on one of Giyu Tomioka’s blades. 10. Heating a Nichirin sword produces a special advantage against demon foes. When heated to a sufficient temperature, a Nichirin blade will turn bright red. This may make it possible to wound a demon to the point that it cannot regenerate, creating wounds that cannot be healed. Looking for a High-Quality Demon Slayer Sword Reproduction?
