Nephalem: The Ancestors of Humans

When a conflict becomes eternal, some of the participants are bound to get tired. Well, that’s what happened with two important characters in our story – Inarius and Lilith. Inarius, a member of the Angiris Council (the great council of angels) has grown tired of the continuing bloodshed. Lilith, the sultry war goddess and the daughter of one of the Prime Evils, Mephisto, is also exhausted by the war. These two characters make up an unlikely team and decide to take matters into their own hands. They gather a renegade band of followers in both these realms and create an entirely different world, away from the reach of these realms.

Inarius creates the new world called Sanctuary with the Worldstone which he captured from the High Heavens. Lilith and Inarius fall in love with each other and start anew in this new world. So do the other angels and demons. With the union of angels and demons, a new species is born. They turn out to be even more powerful than their parents and there’s a growing concern that their powers will soon attract the forces of heaven and hell to Sanctuary. Inarius now modifies the Worldstone and dilutes the power of Nephalem. Over time their powers are reduced to an extent that the Nephalem become mere mortals or humans.

The Sin War

Even though Nephalem became human as time passed, life was good in Sanctuary. Until it all changed. The demons got a whiff of the Sanctuary and unearthed it. Inarius once again came face to face with his violent past and the spectre of war loomed over Sanctuary. Both the forces of Burning Hells and that of Inarius locked horns and each tried to bring the humans to their sides. Inarius established the Cathedral of Light and the Prime Evils created the Temple of Triune to bring more humans to its fold. Meanwhile, Lilith got hold of the Worldstone and restored the powers of Nephalem. As the Nephalem got their powers back, the battle between the Cathedral of Light and the Temple of Triune got intense and the angels of High Heavens came to know of Sanctuary. The land of Sanctuary was facing a tripartite struggle!  

The Sin War ended only with the imprisonment of Inarius in Burning Hells and Lilith’s exile into Void, a secret prison of the universe. The capture of Inarius came about with the agreement between the Angiris Council and the Prime Evils.

Evil returns to Sanctuary

After the agreement, a series of events unfolded. The Prime Evils were banished from the kingdom of Burning Hells as they lost the confidence of lesser evils. Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal went to Sanctuary and ravaged it as far as eyes could see. Archangel Tyrael went after them and created the Horadrim, a powerful army to destroy the three Lords of evil. Horadrim succeeded and captured the three evil Lords into soulstones.
