Create SharePoint Website In Two Different Ways | ARC

Until now, there have been two fundamentally different strategies and procedures for creating a new website in SharePoint. Either as a “Sub Site” or in the form of several separate “Site Collections”. Both have different advantages and disadvantages. With SharePoint development experts always trying to get more out of this amazing online platform, find out what’s new with the Hub Sites for creating websites in SharePoint in this guide.

First way: Create hierarchical subsites in SharePoint

Before you can create a subsite, you must first create a website. This works like this:

  1. Open SharePoint
  2. Click + Create site
  3. Decide on either the team site or  communication site
  4. Provide your site name  and a site description
  5. Add members _
  6. Then click on finish and you have already created your website.

Now that you’ve created your website, you can create subsites.

This works like this:

  1. Open your site in SharePoint
  2. Click + New
  3. After that on page
  4. Now choose any layout and then click on Create Page
  5. Now edit your subsite individually.

Advantages and disadvantages of hierarchical subsites in SharePoint:

Advantages

Basic settings and elements, such as metadata, navigation and security, are “inherited” from the top-level website. These are all SharePoint development tools that make handling new subpages much easier.

Disadvantages

  • Once created, subpages can no longer be moved in SharePoint without a migration tool.
  • The website structure from a certain conglomerate of sub-pages and other sub-levels (like a folder directory) quickly becomes confusing.

Second way: Create a site collection in SharePoint

Typically, you use the SharePoint Central Administration website to create a site collection in a stand-alone deployment. We at Al Rafay Consulting working as a SharePoint development company also use this following method:

This is the way to create using Central Administration

  1. Make sure you have the following administrator rights:
  2. To create a site collection, you must be a member of the Farm Administrators SharePoint group on the computer running the SharePoint Central Administration website.
  3. Open Central Administration and in the Application Management section click  Create Site Collections.
  4. If the Web application in which to create the site collection is not selected in the Web Application section of the Create Site Collection page, click  Change Web Application on the Web Application menu, and then click the Web application in which to create the site collection.
  5. In the Title and Description section, enter the title and description for the site collection.
  6. In the Site Address section, select the path to use for the URL, such as a wildcard included path like /sites/ or the root directory /. If you choose a wildcard included path, you must also enter the site name that appears in the URL of the website is to be used.
  7. In the Template Selection section, select the desired site collection tab (Collaboration,  Enterprise,  or  Publishing ) from the Select  Template list. You can also open the Custom tab to create a blank page and apply a template later. A description of the template you chose is displayed below the template list.
  8. In the Primary site collection administrator section, enter the username (in DOMAIN\username format) of the user who will become the site collection administrator.
  9. In the Secondary site collection administrator section,  enter the username for the secondary site collection administrator.
  10. If you are using quotas to manage storage for site collections, in the Quota Template section, click a template in the Select Quota Templates list,  and then click  OK.

Advantages and disadvantages of site collections in SharePoint:

Advantages

  • Site collections in SharePoint are based on individual, separate top-level sites.
  • The respective owners have maximum control over their website area.
  • Flatter hierarchy

Disadvantages

  • No navigation elements and permissions can be inherited and this has to be done again for each new site collection.

In addition, when a new top-level website (collection) is created, the link that leads to this website is not automatically added to the other SharePoint sites but must be inserted manually into the navigation for them.
