Beginning Your Career in the Fitness Industry As A Fitness Trainer By KAZIFITFORCE

by Uneeb Khan

The start of a new year means that many people will begin their January fitness resolutions. But January is also a time when people resolve to enter the fitness industry and become personal trainers. This is something I am aware of because it was my resolution a few years ago. I now operate my own PT company in Shoreditch, East London, with a team of personal trainers assisting clients in achieving their goals. You may be thinking, That’s easy for Keith, but I have no qualifications in fitness and I’m not even employed in the industry. I was no different. I did it nonetheless, and here’s how you can too.

Find Your Fitness Enthusiasm.

Most people want a career in fitness because they have a passion for fitness, and this combined with a desire to assist others is the best reason to become a personal trainer. When I was younger, I competed for England in freestyle wrestling, which is where my interest in fitness originated. If you’re considering becoming a physical therapist, it’s probably because you share a passion for fitness and want to inspire others to do the same.

Make The Choice

Similarly to a client who finally decides that this is the year they will get fit, deciding to become a physical therapist can be a lengthy process. I know it worked for me. As a teenager, I worked in a family-run gym in Shipley, near Leeds, and I loved it, but after I graduated from high school, I went into social work. There was a nagging feeling that I wasn’t doing what I was supposed to be doing. I ultimately decided to follow my intuition and train as a physical therapist. If you believe the fitness industry may be a good fit for you, January is a good time to investigate your options.

Beginning Your Career in the Fitness Industry

Get Qualified

One of the first things to investigate is the qualification process. You would require the level 2 fitness instructor certification and the level 3 PT certification at minimum. Then, prior to working with clients, you will also require first aid training and insurance. There are numerous providers available, but I chose TRAINFITNESS for my level 2 and 3 certifications and had a fantastic experience. Consider how you learn best (in a group or on your own, more practically based or more theoretically based), your other obligations (such as if you want to work in addition to your current job), and any additional benefits offered (like support after you qualify). Also ensure that any course you take is fully accredited, as you will not be able to obtain insurance otherwise.

Find Your Ideal Environment

It is preferable to gain practical experience as quickly as possible while obtaining certification or after certification. I began as a freelance PT at a chain of gyms, but I had prior experience working in a gym environment, so I was familiar with the set-up and the PT’s role in that environment. I also gained experience as a mobile personal trainer, training clients in parks or at their homes. However, after working with clients in private studios, I realised that I preferred that environment, and so I founded Right Path Fitness. Prioritize gaining as much experience as possible in as many settings as possible, even for your own personal training, as this will assist you in determining your post-qualification career path.

Enjoy It

There is no doubt that becoming a physical therapist can significantly alter your life. It meant moving to London, starting a business, and getting to know a new place for me. However, I can say that being a physical therapist is one of the most rewarding careers available. Your customers will view you as their personal cheerleader, motivator, and inspiration. You’ll be doing a job you enjoy while assisting individuals in feeling better about themselves and becoming healthier and stronger.
