The Special Frozen River Trek: Chadar Trek

One of the most distinctive and difficult treks in India is the Chadar Trek, also referred to as the Frozen River Expedition.  counting on the weather, the six-day chadar walk across the frozen Zanskar River in Ladakh takes place from the latter part of  January through the end of February,  or even the first week of March.

The natives, or Zanskaris as they’re more commonly called, typically go from Zanskar to Nerak and other locations for labor, which mostly entails trading commodities within the summer. The residents walk along the frozen Zanskar River during the winter because the route is blocked and difficult to use. The Zanskar river creates a thick layer of ice that resembles a white blanket and is mentioned as “Chadar” in the local dialect. Thus, the Chadar Trek is the name given to the hike along the frozen Zanskar River.

Even though it appears like a difficult journey,  it is not the hardest because much of it is a flat stroll along the Chadar with little elevation.  you’re in decent shape if you can walk for a few hours without experiencing much effort.
