Azamara Cruise Line Guide

by Uneeb Khan

The Azamara cruise line has carved out its niche catering to the well-traveled and affluent cruisers. It is designed for travelers who love small vessels with country house ambiance and itineraries focusing on destination immersion. The cruise line is a four-vessel fleet identical to the R Class, developed for Renaissance Cruises.

Azamara brings its passengers familiarity and onboard experience that is very similar from one vessel to another. You will not find the typical roller coasters and waterslides on the ship; that is how their demographic likes it. One of its most significant hallmarks is how long the vessels stay in the ports and the AzAmazing Evening Programs that allow the cruisers to enjoy an ashore experience with cultural performances in the stunning locations.

Here is a rundown of all the essential information you need to decide whether you want to sail on the Azamara cruise line.

The Azamara Cruises Fleet

The Azamara fleet is one of the industry’s smallest lines, with only four ships as of this writing. All the line’s vessels are R-class and were initially built for the now-defunct Renaissance Cruises. The ship includes:

  • Azamara Quest
  • Azamara Journey
  • Azamara Onward
  • Azamara Pursuit

The fleet was refurbished during the pandemic to add upscale furnishings. They did an outstanding job making it hard to guess that the vessels are over 20 years old. Each ship on the fleet has a capacity of 700 passengers, placing them in the midsize range. They are large enough to have laundry amenities but small enough for them to enjoy a range of ports that most large ships cannot access.

The ships are about an eighth of the size of the Royal Caribbean’s Wonders of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world. Azamara cruise line was previously owned by Royal Caribbean Group before the COVID-19 pandemic but was sold to Sycamore Partners, a private equity company. Azamara’s president, Carol Cabezas, told the press that the firm has huge expansion plans but did not elaborate on the details.

Itineraries and Destinations

Azamara cruise line fleet sails to different destinations across the world, including

  • South America
  • Africa
  • The Caribbean
  • New Zealand
  • Australia
  • Europe

Azamara cruise line prides itself in providing immersive destinations for cruisers by allowing passengers to stay late in the port until 10 pm and sometimes overnight to soak in the heritage. The cruise line offers its signature program AzAmazing Evenings where they take the cruiser to view iconic venues and experience the local cultural performances. However, this program has been put on hold with performance onboard the ship due to the pandemic.

Azamara cruise line itineraries range from a week or two, but the line also offers itineraries that last up to 100 days. Here the ship will call on more than 60 ports in more than 24 countries.

Cabin and Suites

All the rooms in Azamara, regardless of the category and type, include a queen size bed that you can convert to two twin beds if you want. They also have nightstands, a vanity/desk with a phone, a USB charging port, a TV, a minibar, a closet, Individual climate control, a slipper, a hair dryer, and fresh flowers.

Additionally, every cabin has a bathroom with bath products, towels, a shower, sinks, a toiler, and storage shelves. Their room has daily turndown and makeup services and 24-hour room services, a daily bulletin of activities, a tote bag, and turndown treats. The suits, on the other, had complimentary butler services for the cruisers.

Entertainment and Activities

Azamara is engaging and fun but not as extensive as you would expect in other large fleets. Some of the entertainment you can expect on board include:

  • Theaters and shows
  • Scavenger hunts
  • Wine tastings
  • Complimentary deck walks
  • Shore excursions
