Sugar which contains an aldehyde group is known as Aldose. Example of Aldose: Glucose, galactose, ribose etc.

KETOSE:

Ketose is also a Monosaccharides. Sugar which contains the keto group is known as Ketose. The carbon skeleton of Ketose contains ketone groups (-C=O). ketose is also used in processed food.  Example of Ketose: Fructose, ribulose, erythrulose and so on.

Difference between Aldose and Ketose:

·  Aldose is a monosaccharide which contains an aldehyde group in their carbon skeleton. Ketose is also a monosaccharide which contains Keto group in their carbon skeleton.

·  Aldose found mostly in plants and ketose found in processed form.

·  Both are sugar but have different carbon groups.

·  Seliwanoff’s test is used to differentiate between Aldose and ketose.

·  Aldose has light pink colour in Seliwanoff’s test and Ketose has deep cherry colour in the test.

·  Aldose tends to isomerize into ketose. Ketose can also isomerize into Aldose when carbonyl group at the end of the chain.
