In 2022 and 2023, China contained COVID-19: Restrictions and Surveillance Measures

A number of measures were implemented by the Chinese government to curb the spread of COVID-19 in 2022, including widespread lockdowns and travel restrictions. Toward the end of the year, the virus had been largely contained to an acceptable level, and some restrictions were being relaxed.

As a major new outbreak of Coronavirus occurred in December 2023, the Chinese government had to re-implement some of the same measures made in 2022. As a result, the government increased the lockdowns and restrictions to cover the entire country this time.

As a result, Chinese citizens were subjected to harsher policies than in 2022. Clearly, the lockdowns in 2023 were more intense and widespread, with a greater focus on social distancing. Schools and universities were closed, and businesses were required to observe stricter hygiene standards.

To enforce the new regulations, the Chinese government used both physical and digital measures. Besides police checkpoints, the government used facial recognition technology and a tracking app to monitor citizen movements. Further, a contact-tracing system was used to identify and isolate those who had come into contact with someone who carried the virus.

To help businesses and workers affected by the lockdowns, the Chinese government implemented a number of relief measures. The government provided financial assistance to businesses, suspended taxes and rent, expanded unemployment benefits, and created relief funds.

To combat the spread of the virus, the Chinese government also introduced a number of new public health policies. Testing and quarantine procedures were more stringent, as well as contact tracing procedures were more aggressive. Additionally, citizens were encouraged to wear masks, practice good hygiene, and distance themselves socially.

The Chinese government declared at the end of the year that the virus had been contained and the lockdowns had been lifted. Despite the new policies slowing the spread of the virus, many citizens were still wary.

Coronavirus 2023 served as a stark reminder of the risks of not taking preemptive measures in combating its spread, and the importance of effective government intervention. With the virus spreading around the world, governments must ensure their policies are effective, comprehensive, and take into account citizens’ needs.
