How Summer Bedspreads Can Help Keep You Cool Even On the Hottest Nights

by Uneeb Khan

Covers on your bed too warm? Or maybe the bedspreads you have at home right now absorb too much heat during the summer. While you always have the option to turn the thermostat down during a terribly hot day, you’ll still have to pay dearly for it once the utility bill arrives.

Investing in cooling gels for your pillows, or a bedside fan and humidifier are all excellent ways to maintain cooler temperatures indoors. But while there are many ways to keep cool at night during the summer, something as simple as having the right bed covers can actually make a huge difference.

Why Invest in Summer Bedspreads?
While comforters and quilts are great covers for the colder seasons, they can be too much to handle during the hotter months.

Bedspreads, on the other hand, are single-layer beddings that are just as capable of covering the entire bed. They’re lightweight and often feature patterns and prints as well as elaborate finishes and fringes.

Their lightweight nature makes them a bit more breathable than your thicker beddings, allowing for better airflow while you sleep. And, more than anything, bedspreads are often pretty and comfortable. You can find bedspreads in nearly any style or design, from the retro and country styles, to the more modern prints and patterns.

Summer Bedspreads Are Low Maintenance
Another great thing about bedspreads is that because they’re thin and light, they’re also usually easier to wash than a thick quilt or comforter. Most bedspreads come with instructions for wash, whether that’s machine-wash, hand-wash, or dry-cleaned.

Drying a bedspread is much easier as well, thanks to their thin fabric. If you don’t have a spin-dryer available at home or nearby, airing your bedspread out in the sun will dry it within a day.

Bedspreads VS Coverlets
A common question that gets asked is, “What’s the difference between a bedspread and a coverlet, and how can you choose between one or the other?” By design the most significant difference between a bedspread and a coverlet are their length and coverage.

A bedspread is large and oversized, wherein you’re able to pull them up over the pillows while still having them also hang down towards the floor.

A coverlet, on the other hand, is much smaller compared to a bedspread, designed to cover the top of the bed and hang down just past the box springs. Coverlets are also commonly used as a decorative element at the foot of the bed, or an extra layer between the quilt or duvet and your bedsheets.

In that sense, coverlets are more versatile than bedspreads due to their length, and can be used together with duvets and quilts both during winter and summer seasons. Think of them as either a light blanket, or an extra layer for warmth.

Bedspreads are more known for their decorative styles and structures. They’re often pleasing to the eye, and just as comfortable to the touch. They might not be adequate enough to keep you warm during the winter, though.

Where to Find Quality, Timeless Bedspreads
Summer bedspreads are always good to have, and handy to use around the summer. Their decorative nature also helps add that touch of style and color to your bedroom, sometimes completely changing and altering the mood and atmosphere of a room.
