Things To Consider When Buying Lanyards For Name Badges

by Uneeb Khan

Lanyards are a very common and often overlooked part of company and school IDs and name badges. In fact, many would probably consider lanyards for name badges as an afterthought, and just pick whatever is readily available or convenient.

However, choosing the right lanyard for your employees and students to wear is also important, especially as they’ll be wearing these day in and day out. You want your students and staff to be comfortable wearing them at all times of the day, and not be plagued with damages either to their skin or to the IDs themselves.

That said, here are a few things to take into consideration as you’re choosing what lanyards to purchase for your organization.

Material & Fabric
Lanyards for name badges these days are available in several different types of fabrics and materials, including nylon, cotton, polyester, satin, and more.

Nylon is one of the more common choices for lanyard materials, as they’re often smooth and comfortable to wear.

Cotton is another common choice. Known for being a soft, eco-friendly material, cotton also has great water absorbing and wicking qualities that allow it to easily absorb water and then dry out.

Polyester is a synthetic material that can mimic the softness of cotton. They’re also durable, wrinkle resistant, and can take dyes and colors easily compared to other fabrics.

Satin is also considered a durable fabric that has that luxurious look and feel. It has that shiny and glossy finish comparable to silk. Additionally, satin that’s made from 100% pure silk is also hypoallergenic.

Attachment or Lanyard Clips
One of the most important factors in deciding what lanyard for name badges you’ll be purchasing and rolling out to your employees are the attachments. The attachments ultimately determine how you’ll be attaching your name badges to the lanyard. And because you can expect your name badges to be worn frequently, choosing a lanyard with sturdy and durable attachments is a must.

So what are some of the different types of attachments available that you should consider?

1. Metal Clips
This is one of the more common clips found in lanyards. They’re relatively easy to open and attach your IDs to, and they’re sturdy enough to withstand a lot of wear and tear. The more common versions of these clips that you’ll often find in lanyards are the metal trigger clips and the carabiner clips, both of which have a small lever that opens the clip and allows you to attach your ID or name badge.

2. Metal hook
Though similar, hooks open and operate slightly differently from clips. Swivel J hooks and flat metal hooks, for example, require you to press the hooks inward for you to be able to attach your name badge.

3. Crocodile clip
Crocodile clips is a fitting name for the type of clip that opens and closes much like the jaws of a crocodile. These clips sometimes have teeth in them to further strengthen their hold. However the smaller ones simply clip at the edge. They have a pretty good hold or grip on your name badges, however they’re a little bit less secure compared to trigger clips or metal hooks.

4. Split Ring
Finally there are split rings. These, perhaps, offer the greatest security for your name badges once you attach them to the lanyard. However, they also require the most effort, as you have to thread your IDs and name badges through the split ring to secure it in place.

Don’t Scrimp on Quality Lanyards & Name Badges
Quality should be a top priority in every aspect of your business, even your lanyards. After all, you don’t want to end up spending more than you should replace company badges and lanyards repeatedly because they tend to break and fade, or irritate the skin of your staff and students.
