131 Sometimes you see an outfit on the runway or in an ad and think to yourself, what were they thinking? As much as we love high fashion and the way it makes us feel when we see something new and beautiful, sometimes it doesn’t make much sense at all. It can be hard to keep up with the changing tastes of high fashion we might be accustomed to pretty things like ruffles, but then someone turns around and uses ruffles in a way that seems like they just don’t fit properly. So why is high fashion so ugly? Table of Contents A snobby history of trendsAnother reason to #throwback The difference between couture and ready-to-wear Garment construction takes time A lesson from Dior Know the words before you read more into it than there really is. A snobby history of trends When it comes to fashion so ugly, it’s all about the most recent trends. But as a student of fashion history, I can tell you there are other factors at play in why something is considered high fashion. Fashion only looks good when it makes you stand out and feel confident, so what people will find fashionable changes over time with their needs and desires. It’s also hard to define high fashion because everyone has different standards of what they think is elegant. People tend to favor designers who embrace trends they themselves love and ignore ones they don’t care for. Which brings me back to my original question: Why is high fashion so ugly? Another reason to #throwback I was scrolling through my feed on Instagram the other day and I happened to come across this picture. The caption said: Hi, fashion so ugly. There’s no denying that at first glance this is a very odd look. Why would someone want to wear their big boots over a pair of skinny jeans in the snow? To be fair, it’s not all that cold where I am today (San Diego), but I can totally see why someone would do this in colder places where it actually gets too cold for the snow. With regards to this post title, there are plenty of people who would disagree with me and say that high fashion can sometimes be ugly. My rebuttal to those people is simple – go have a look around your local mall! The difference between couture and ready-to-wear The main difference between couture and ready-to-wear is that couture are not mass produced. Couture garments are made to order for a particular customer and created for a specific occasion such as a wedding or formal evening event. The term couture also means, fashion so ugly. Ready-to-wear refers to off the rack clothing, where patterns, designs, and fabrics can be changed easily and manufactured at large quantities. Garment construction takes time The main issue with fashion so ugly is the style. Styles can take a long time to develop, which makes it difficult for designers to keep up with the latest trends. A great example of this is how long it took the designer Dame Zandra Rhodes to produce garments in the 1980s; she was one of the first high-end designers to start incorporating trendy styles in her garments. Even so, it took her some time and practice before she was able to produce what would become her signature style that incorporated bright colors and elaborate designs. This doesn’t just apply to fancy clothing made by luxury brands either – clothing on a smaller scale also takes time due to its development process. A lesson from Dior One of the most essential components of fashion is its beauty. A basic understanding of this fact is all you need to understand the question: why is high fashion so ugly? Dior, a renowned designer in the world of fashion, recently held an event that showcased an interview with their founder and creator; Christian Dior. In this interview he noted that every woman I see has something beautiful to offer. He spoke on how each person’s body has different points in which they feel most confident as well as areas they would like to cover up or avoid attention from. The way women are dressing today are wearing garments that both point out their weaknesses and try to hide them at the same time. Know the words before you read more into it than there really is. All of the pop stars and models on Instagram look like they just stepped out of the pages of a fashion magazine. They are all slim and put together, wearing expensive high-end designer clothes that not many people can afford. Meanwhile, the real world is filled with girls who want to wear something beautiful but can’t because they’re too large or too small.
