Soil, Climate & Temperature

Watermelon can be cultivated in any fertile soil. On its excellent yield, sandy loam soil is considered suitable because watermelon is produced in large quantities in acidic soil. The pH of the land in its cultivation. The value of pH should be between 5.5 and 6.5. Where the farmer brothers cannot grow crops, they cultivate watermelon there.

The watermelon plant is of the dry climate and is easily cultivated in low humidity areas. Its plant is tolerant of both hot and cold environments. But frost falling in winter is harmful to plant growth. Watermelon plants can tolerate a maximum temperature of 39 degrees and a minimum of 15 degrees.

Field Preparation & Fertiliser

After ploughing the watermelon field, it is prepared well. For this, deep ploughing of the domain is done in the beginning, due to which the remnants of the old crop in the field are destroyed. After ploughing, the field’s soil is left open like this to get sunlight. And 6 to 8 carts of old cow dung manure are put in the area, and two to three slant ploughs are done, due to which it is mixed in the soil field. After this, water is applied to the area. Then using water, when the ground of the field starts appearing dry from above, then once again, the field is ploughed.

After the ground becomes friable, the land is levelled by putting a pat in the area. After this, long rows of grooves are prepared to keep a distance of 5 to 6 feet on the flat land. Next, a proper amount of phosphorus, urea, cartab, and potash with cow dung is mixed in the soil and fill in the pits.

Planting Method

Watermelon seeds are planted in the form of sources. Watermelon is grown in large quantities in the plains of India. About 4 to 5 KG seeds are required in a one-hectare field. These seeds are planted in the prepared pits from 2 to 3 feet to a depth of 1.5 cm. Special care has to be taken of water logging in its field, so after planting the seeds, the pits are covered with transparent polythene, and light holes are made in the polythene at some distance.

This reduces the pits’ waterlogging, and the plants get enough sunlight. The months of mid-February and mid-March are considered suitable for planting watermelon seeds. Due to this, farmers get more quantity of production.

Irrigation

If watermelon seeds are planted on the banks of the river, then they do not need irrigation. Because the roots of its plants get water quickly from the ground. Sowing of seeds done in plain and dry areas requires more irrigation. During this, the first irrigation has to be done immediately after planting the roots, and the second irrigation is done within 3 to 4 days. When its seeds germinate and become a plant, during that time, its plants have to be watered every week.

Weed Control

Watermelon plants need more weed control. For which weeding – hoeing method is used. The first wedding of its plants is done after a month when weeds appear in the field. After hoeing, the soil is applied to the roots of the plants, due to which the plant develops nicely, and the yield is also high. Watermelon plants require a maximum of three to four hoeings.

Harvesting

Watermelon plants are ready for harvesting after 85 to 90 days of seed sowing. When the stalks attached to its fruits appear dry, they should be plucked. Apart from this, when the colour of the fruit starts showing light yellow, then understand that the fruit is completely ripe.
